For context, anything above 10.5 gpg is classified as "very hard." Nearly every home on SAWS sits well into that range, day in and day out.

- White or yellowish scale on faucets and showerheads. That crust is calcium carbonate, and it is building up inside the pipes at the same rate you can see it building up outside.

A softener protects your pipes, water heater, and appliances from scale. It is not primarily a drinking-water upgrade.
Don't buy a salt-free "conditioner" expecting it to solve 20 gpg hardness. Salt-free systems change how minerals crystallize so they bond less, but they do not remove hardness.
